I'm not really into
Disney nature documentaries. I've seen a few they did in the 1960s on
The Wonderful World of Disney, but the new ones they put out don't last
in the theaters long enough for me to catch (Although I think I saw the
one about the chimpanzees, and the one about elephants)
This one is a lot different from the old docs 50 years ago. It's very playful with the narrative and tells a more linear story voiced by Tiny Fey. What's most interesting about this is how the plot follows the Disney formula of a true underdog coming up. They must have had to do a lot of research and follow these monkeys for a long period of time to pull that off.
The story is about a single mother named Mya who's on the very bottom of the social status and must beat the odds in order to provide a better life for her son, kip.
It was so fascinating to see how the Monkey kingdom mimics the kingdom of man. Whenever someone tries to convince me that we are better than other animals (cause sometimes man forgets that's what we are). I'll have this movie to use as an example of how that's not accurate.
I went into this film not thinking much of anything but killing time, but it was not a waste of time. It was great!

"True Story" (2015
release; 100 min.) brings the story of how a reporter becomes entangled
in a murder suspect's world. As the movie opens, we see some brutal
images of a young child being stuffed into a suitcase, which later turns
up in the water. What is going on here? After the opening credits, we
get to know Michael Finkel (played by Jonah Hill), a New York Times
reporter, as he interviews young men somewhere in Africa. Alas, later on
he is caught fabricating some of the facts for the subsequent NYT piece
and he is let go in disgrace. Meanwhile, we get to know Christian Longo
(played by James Franco), accused of killed his wife and 3 young kids.
When he is rounded up, he claims to be Michael Finkel, NYT reporter. It
is not long before Longo makes contact, from jail, with the real Mike
Finkel. To tell you more would spoil your viewing pleasure, you'll just
have to see for yourself how it all plays out.
Couple of comments: "True Story" is based on the Mike Finkel book of the same name, and if of course a true story. The premise of the movie is really intriguing (and cleverly played up in the trailer), reason I went to see this in the first place, namely is Longo somehow playing Finkel, while being in jail, and if so, what disastrous effects could that have for Finkel? Alas, in the movie it doesn't bear out. There is lots of build up in the movie, and ultimately not enough pay-off. I am all for a long build-up, but there has to be a reward for sticking with the build up, and when the reward finally comes, it's simply not enough. A quick word about the acting performances: James Franco does what he can with the limited material that is given to him. Jonah Hill is okay as the disgraced NYT reporter. The real star of the movie Felicity Jones in the role of Jill, the girlfriend of Mike Finkel. I also want to give props to prolific soundtrack composer Marco Beltrami (recently of The November Man; The Drop; The Giver, just to name those), who once again provides a lovely soundtrack.
The early evening theater screening where I saw this at was attended not very well (less than 10 people), but in fairness, it was a weekday evening. That said, while this is not a 'bad' movie per se, nor do I feel that the movie is all that it could've become. That said, if you have a chance to check out "True Story", be it in the theater or on DVD/Blu-ray, I suggest you do and draw your own conclusion.

When I review a movie, I ask myself but one question: How entertaining is it? Of course, such a thing is always a matter of opinion and depends on an individual's personal background, personality, tastes, preferences, interests, experiences, and so forth. As a reviewer who likes all kinds of movies and hopes these reviews will be helpful to all kinds of moviegoers, I'm as objective and open-minded as I can be. Regardless of its genre, its subject matter or its background, all I expect from a movie is to enjoy it. This attitude allows me the freedom to like movies of any and all kinds, regardless of whether others think that I'm "supposed" to like them or not. Did the movie's comedy make me laugh, did its a drama draw me in and make me care, did its thrilling moments… thrill me? Etc., etc. You get the point. I expect a film to entertain me – to make me FEEL something. But the best movies also inform, educate, enlighten and uplift. Oh, and bonus points for originality, creativity, and technical and artistic excellence. When you have the pleasure of seeing a film with all of those characteristics, it is a "must see". It is a treasure. It is… art. "Woman in Gold" (PG-13, 1:49) is such a film.
"Woman in Gold" is based on the true story of Maria Altmann, who, as a young woman (played by Tatiana Maslany of "Orphan Black" fame) fled her beloved Austria as the Nazi noose was tightening around the necks of her Jewish countrymen. Encouraged by her family and with her new husband by her side, she left behind the people, places and possessions she loved. One of those possessions was a Gustav Klimt painting of her dear aunt Adele (Antje Traue), a painting which would soon be taken by the Nazis and, after World War II, end up in a Vienna art museum where it became so revered that one character calls it "the Mona Lisa of Austria".
When Maria (played as an old woman by Dame Helen Mirren) loses her sister, she discovers some letters that, along with 1990s changes in Austrian law, make her think that she might reclaim what once belonged to her family. She enlists the help of Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), a friend's son, to look into the matter for her. Randy is a young attorney who has just started a new job and whose wife (Katie Holmes) is concerned about the impact of a lengthy case on their growing family, but he becomes obsessed with Maria's cause. In Austria, Randy gains the assistance of a local journalist (Daniel Brühl), but this long and complicated bureaucratic and legal struggle may prove to be too much for any of them, or even all of them. If you ever start to think that this lengthy and emotionally taxing fight is merely about the extremely high value of the painting or even one woman's need for closure, you'll remember Maria ending a conversation about her motivations with "and then there's justice." "Woman in Gold" has something for everyone. It's an unusually dramatic history lesson, a riveting drama, an involving mystery, a fascinating legal thriller and a touching story of families and friendships. All members of the very talented cast bring their "A game", the writing is excellent and the editing is superb. All these factors come together in a narrative which transitions seamlessly between the story's present and its past, doing so as effectively as I've ever seen it done. The opening of the movie, a short scene involving the creation of the painting, effortlessly but effectively communicates how special the painting of the title really is. The film shows the plight of the Jews in Europe more personally than any film since "Schindler's List", but without being overwrought. It also sheds light on what it meant for a country to capitulate to the Nazis as well as the long-term effects of that chapter in history. Many scenes in the movie are dramatic and suspenseful, but the portion of the film in which Maria and her husband escape Austria is on par with the climactic scenes in Oscar-winning films like "Argo" and "The Sound of Music". Whichever genre or cubby hole that professional critics choose to place this movie in, it rises above most films to which it might be compared.
Like a great painting, a great film is a joy and an honor to see for yourself. I hope that "Woman in Gold" is remembered when all those gold statuettes are handed out this next awards season. The worth of the movie is, in the end, only my opinion, but this film informed me, educated me, enlightened me, uplifted me, and, as a wonderful work of art, it entertained me. "A+"

Mall Cop 2 is directed
by Andy Fickman and stars Kevin James, Raini Rodriguez, David Henrie and
Neal Mcdonough. Basically, the plot is that after six years of keeping
the malls safe, Paul Blart has earned a vacation to Vegas for a
conference with other security guards. He heads to Vegas with his
teenage daughter before she heads off to college. But safety never takes
a holiday when a gang of people try to steal some paintings. I really
enjoyed the first Mall Cop movie and it is one of my favourite comedies
of recent years. The first one was directed by Steve Carr and you can
really tell the change of director. This movie is set in Las Vegas and I
really liked the fact that they changed the setting because it was more
conducive to comedy and a much funnier place. Kevin James in the movie
is as funny as the first one, I couldn't think of anyone else to play
his role and he does it perfectly. He is really funny in the movie and
is really dedicated to his role. A thing that the first movie was
missing but that this one got right is that the sidekicks where actually
funny and added a lot to the story. For instance, the other Mall Cops
where as funny as Kevin James and that definitely added a lot to the
movie. The first had no real sidekicks and though Kevin James was funny
he could have needed the help of others to make it better. I really like
this style of comedies and Mall Cop 2 did it very well. A lot of good
jokes and memorable moments. My only issue was that the movie takes
about 25 minutes to really get going. The first part of the movie is
slow but does have a few good gags. But once it gets started it is
great! This movie was as good as the first one because of a minor issue
but the setting and story was better than the first movie and that's why
I highly recommend checking this movie out. It is a perfect summer
movie that isn't too long and that will make laugh everyone from all
ages. Check it out and have a lot of fun!

Such a cute film
User Reviews
My husband and I really
enjoyed this. It's sweet and romantic. If you like a movie without
swearing and gratuitous sex, etc., this is a feel-good story. Alan Alda
was wonderful, and we enjoyed seeing him in this role. Scott Eastwood
was convincing as a PBR rider trying not to become a has-been and
working through issues of his own. There's action for the guys (bull
riding), and something for the ladies (bull riding, and a flash of Scott
Eastwood's nice buttocks-thank you for that-so there's something for
everyone. The actress who played Alan Alda's wife was absolutely
darling. Very romantic film about two people who had a meet-cute and
found their lives changed in many ways.

I saw this movie today
with the kiddies. I would say it is a really solid movie. It is the
story of an unlikely friendship that forms when an outcast alien meets a
sassy little girl on a mission to find her mom. I think the story is
well thought out and there are many hidden life "gems" noted within. The
theme of judging others sticks out as well as themes of "being
yourself" and learning from your mistakes. It is a little predictable
but I think all adults feel that way about children's movies. The acting
was good and surprisingly Rihanna did very good (I had my doubts about
that). The kids loved it and laughed a lot. They also enjoyed the music a
lot and that is really what it is all about. I would recommend it for
families.

Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted
by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and
an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster
would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the
story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing
aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and
forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation,
panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest
beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade,
as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first
mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

A disgraced member of the military police investigates a series of nasty child murders during the Stalin-era Soviet Union.
Director: Daniel Espinosa
Writers: Richard Price (screenplay), Tom Rob Smith (novel)
Stars: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace | See full cast and crew
Storyline
Based on Tom Rob Smith’s 2008 novel; Child 44 proves how difficult it can be to effectively adapt such meaty material. Charting the life of Ukranian orphan Leo (Hardy) as he climbs the ranks within Soviet Russia, the story then briskly moves to him investigating a series of child murders. The film’s main idea that “there is no murder in paradise” is a compelling one and sets up the twists and turns of the story. However, the narrative is badly handled and the film plods along at a snail’s pace. There is some redemption in its final act but not enough to make up for the convoluted story that proceeds it.
User Reviews
Whilst Child 44’s trailers have billed it as a hunt for a serial killer it is much more than that – and in a way that is to the detriment of the film. In 137 minutes, we’re given a wealth of story line and ideas but none feel as fully formed as they should – characters are introduced but never developed and there are plot lines thrown in that don’t amount to anything. The representation of the day to day living in Soviet Russia is compelling to watch, as is Leo’s investigation into the murders. However, the two stories continually interrupt the tension within the film; making the reveal of the killer seemingly an afterthought.Solid performances by the cast help the film. Hardy dons a thick Russian accent to play Leo. Whilst his accent is distracting and at times laughable, his body language in certain scenes reveals more than you could imagine. After two young girls are orphaned Leo sits down and seemingly lets the emotion wash over him. It’s an effective piece of acting by Hardy and reinforces how important his physical presence can be. Noomi Rapace delivers a solid performance as Leo’s downtrodden wife, combining fear and strength in equal measures. However, her character is underwritten and her motivations continually change as the film progresses.
The stand out performance throughout the film is Joel Kinnaman’s slimy agent Vassili. Cowardly and manipulative, he steals each scene he’s in and makes what could have been a one dimensional character into someone much more intriguing and unnerving. Paddy Considine, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Vincent Cassel all provide good support, but ultimately they’re considerable talents are wasted. Considine in particular is riveting to watch and I left the cinema wishing that he’d had more screen time. Gary Oldman seems to once again being doing his trick of speaking quietly and then shouting. It feels as if he’s been brought on board purely for his name as his character is hugely under developed and amounts to nothing more than a cameo.
Daniel Espinosa is growing as a director, but with Child 44 he’s fallen into the trap of trying to do too much. Storylines are introduced but not followed up and the constant shift makes it difficult to find the film even remotely tense. The recreation of Soviet Russia is handled well and visually the film delivers in each scene. Cuts between the sound of a squealing train and children’s screaming is effective. It’s just a shame that as a whole the film falls completely flat. Child 44 is a difficult novel to tackle and whilst there are elements of brilliance in Richard Price’s screenplay, the pacing is sloppy and ultimately uninteresting.

But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn't showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny - and in for a major cultural shock of her own - "Vampa" Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a "monster-in-training" boot camp. But little do they know that Drac's grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood - and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania - things are going to get batty!- Written by Sony Pictures
